Equipment Cool
stuff you need for flyfishing.
Here is a list of things I find useful:
Click the pictures for more information.
Backing gives
you more line on the reel than just the 80 to 100 feet of fly line. Some fish
can run 100 yards of backing as soon as they are hooked. If you need extra
backing go to a smaller diameter backing made from spectra.

Belt Bags used
to hold fly boxes, leaders, Spare reels or lines, First aid kit. The heat makes
a belt bag more practical.
Some have spare water bottle holders which I recommend.

Bug Repellent
is great but some types will ruin your fly line. I use Ultrathon as it is mead
to use around fly line.

Chest bags like
a belt bag but better for wade fishing. Has a fold down work area on the front
to hold flies.

This one has a cool bag in the back compartment to put cold drinks and a sandwich in.
Fluorocarbon
is the material you use to attach the fly line to the fly. It has a higher
specific gravity than monofilament so becomes invisible to the fish. I have used
it and caught 5 to 1 against mono in fresh and salt water.

Fly is a hook wrapped in fur, feathers or synthetic material to look and act like something a fish will bite. They can be smaller than a flea or as big as 12 inches for large salt water fish.
Fly boxes Used
to hold flies. You will need several for different flies or types of flies or lures.

Fly lines Different
fly lines for different types of fishing. Some lines float, sink, fast sink, or
sink tip. All have special uses. Click the pictures for more information.

Hat I wear a wide brim hat to protect me from the sun and keep from sinking a fly into my head. Some hats have a back piece that covers your neck for added protection.
Hemostats are medical tools used to remove the hook from the fish's mouth and not destroy the fly. I like the ones that are also scissors.
Hook file diamond is what I prefer but ceramic also works well. A hook should easily go into your finger nail. If it slips sharpen your hook. You will hook more fish with a sharp hook.
Knives Are
very useful when fishing. They can be used for so many things, filet a fish, cut
rope or fishing line, self defense
when a shark comes at you while wade fishing. The big problem is rust in salt
water. I found the perfect solution in Warren Thomas Knives. They are made of
titanium and carbon fiber so will not rust and are very light. The edge is lined
with carbide which enables it to cut Kevlar fishing line easily. I use a neck
knife as I can get to it while wading and it is always handy.

Lanyards Used
to hold your tools for fishing like hemostats, nippers, leaders etc... Much like
a fly fishing vest used for trout fishing but because of the heat this will keep
you cooler.
Michael Thornton makes some of
the nicest lanyards out there.
Leader is what attaches the fly line to the tippet and then to the fly. It can be made from different pound test lines, tapering from 80 to 2 pound test depending on the use. I use a tapered leader to tie the tippet to, then you have no knots that will catch vegetation. Most bass and saltwater fishing I use 12 pound test. If for toothy critters I use a bite tippet of steel or heavier fluorocarbon.
Multi tool are folding wire cutting pliers that also contain, file knife, screw drivers, scissors, can opener and many other choices. I carry a Leatherman but Gerber, Buck, Able and others are available. I like the Leatherman with the diamond file. Be sure the wire cutters will cut a hook in case you hook yourself.
Nets can be small with catch and release netting for trout to big diameter long handled nets used for saltwater fishing.
Nippers cut the leaders when they need replacing. Similar to fingernail clippers but with extra tools like a pin to clean glue out of the flies eye. Some have a hook sharpener.
Outfits are
a rod, reel, line, backing, leader and sometimes a fly box, rod/reel case, or
assortment of flies. See right>>>>>>>>>>>

Polarized sun glasses are used to protect your eyes from the sun and hooks. They allow you to see through the glare on the water so you can see the fish or structure where fish hide.
Reels are
used to hold the fly line. Unless it is for saltwater flyfishing then you
need a specialized reel. They can cost between $30.00 to $600.00.

Rods are what casts the fly line. They very in price from $100.00 to $1000.00.Freshwater rods are very light while saltwater rods are heavier. They also have an extended fighting butt to help get leverage on the fish. They also have rust proof parts and larger guides.
Sunscreen and sunglasses are very important. I found this out the hard way as I was diagnosed with cataracts. Skin cancer is also a risk. I like bullfrog spray watermelon flavor. With spray you don't have to get it on your hands which the fish will smell. If you need to spread it around use the back of your hand.
Tippet
is what you tie to the tapered leader and attach your fly to. You should
carry different pound test for different fish and size flies.

Vests are
for holding all the things you carry when fly fishing. In colder weather they
are great, in the heat get one with a mesh back or lining. Or carry a belt bag
or chest bag.

Waders will keep you dry when wading in streams lakes or the bay. Some are neoprene but the new ones are made from breathable material so when the temperature goes up you don't sweat as much.
