Fly Tying
There are many pieces of equipment and materials used to make or tie flies. There are too many materials to list them all but, here are some of them.
A Vice is
what you use to hold the hook while you attach fur, feathers or synthetic
materials. I use a Renzetti traveler vice and love the rotary style vice. It
allows you to see all sides of the fly as you make it.

Benches
are helpful keeping your supplies in order when tying. Many styles are available
how ever a good crafts men can make one custom for your tying

Bobbin
is what holds the thread you use to wrap around the hook and hold materials in
place. Their are many different sizes and shapes as well as materials they are
made from.

Bodkin
is a needle with a comfortable handle
used to apply glue to the thread or to pick out fibers on the fly.

Buck tail is
for tails or wings on flies. It is dyed in many different colors. It is a solid
fiber and will sink in the water.

Capes
are used on large bass bugs and saltwater flies

Chenille
is a string like material made from different types of natural or synthetic
fibers and wrapped around the hook for the body of the fly.

Deer Body Hair
is a hollow fiber like a straw. As it is tied to the hook it flairs out and can
be shaped with scissors. It floats well and is used on deer hair bass bugs.

Dubbing
is chopped fibers in various colors and like chenille used for the body of the
fly.

Dubbing Spinner
is used to apply dubbing or fibers to the hook. Most for the underbody of flies.

Dumb bell
eyes come in different materials and colors. They weight the fly and can be
attached to make the fly ride hook point up.

Feathers
are one of the main things tied around the hook to make a fly. Their are many
shapes to use.

Flash-A-Bou
is a synthetic material that adds color and flash to the fly. Is a type of Mylar
that holds up to toothy critters and reflects light.

Holographic Flash-A-Bou
Flex cement
is a flexible glue perfect to seal the finished head of the fly.

Fly Rattles
make sound that helps attract fish to your fly. Many fish and crabs, shrimp and
crawfish make a clicking sound the fish can hear through the lateral line.
Excellent in stained or dirty water, they bring fish from farther away to your
fly.

Hackle
is the neck of a roster. The feathers are hollow and float so are used for dry
flies.

Hackle pliers
are good to hold the end of a feather or hackle while wrapping around the hook

Hair Stacker is what makes
the cut off ends even so they can be attached to the hook.

Kits
are great for beginners as they come with everything you need to get started.
Later as you get in to it you can upgrade your vice or add more tools and
materials to your set. You can pick the kit for the type of fish you are after.
They will come with hooks, fur, feathers and synthetic materials as well as a
book or video to get you started correctly.
Bass
Saltwater
Trout/ pan fish
Krystal Flash
is a synthetic material that adds flash and color to the fly. Mostly used for
Bass of Saltwater. I use it all the time even for pan fish flies.

Neck Hackle
is from the neck of a hen and has solid fibers and will sink. It comes in many
sizes and colors.

Scissors
are used to cut the materials. Their are different sizes , shapes and types for
different uses. I find a short sharp pair and a curved pair to be the most
useful. Sewing scissors have to small holes for most men's fingers.

Thread comes
in many sizes, types of material and colors. I use a Kevlar or flat waxed
mostly.
Kevlar
Flat waxed
Threader
will make it easier to get the thread in your bobbin. I have 6 bobbins each with
a different color thread so tying is faster.

Tool sets
give you all the basic tools you need to get started. You can upgrade the vice
later if needed.

Tweezers
used to pick up small eyes or other small items to put on the fly. It is also
good to hold something in place while you glue it or prepare to attach to the
hook.

Whip finishing
tool used to finish the head of the fly. I don't use it as I learned to do it by
hand before they were invented.
